What is CBD Used For?

Hemp Plant: A History

Cannabidiol (CBD) is derived from a plant called Cannabis sativa. Two strains of this plant are relevant today – the hemp plant and the marijuana plant. The hemp plant (also known as industrial hemp) is abundant in CBD and less so in THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), while the marijuana plant has a higher amount of THC and not as much CBD.

Cannabis sativa is naturally found in central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is one of the oldest plants to have ever been cultivated. In ancient China, Japan, and Korea, it was used for making clothes, ropes, and shoes. Its psychoactive properties were already known and widely enjoyed in civilizations such as Scythia some 500 years BC.

Precisely because of these psychoactive effects, however, the use of Cannabis sativa for anything other than the production of various goods is restricted in many countries across the world. The first examples of cannabis banned from use date back to 14th century Arabia. Because of these widespread restrictions, cannabis and cannabinoid research started taking off only recently.

There is much to be discovered about the hemp plant and CBD. Science is still catching up with this substance and its potential benefits, but we know enough to dispel some common myths and misconceptions about this versatile compound.

CBD is completely safe to use

No substance is completely safe to use; under certain conditions, even water has adverse effects. The same goes for CBD.

Fortunately, the WHO states that this is a mostly well-tolerated substance with low potential for side effects. Adverse reactions reported so far include lethargy, irritability, and digestive issues. Those sensitive to Tylenol and Advil are more at risk of developing these side effects. Additionally, you should be cautious if you’re already taking prescribed medication. It’s best to consult with a medical professional about possible interactions between CBD and other medicines.

Once again, you shouldn’t be worried about possibly becoming addicted to CBD. Unlike THC, this compound has no dependence potential, meaning you can easily stop using it at any time. In that sense, it is completely safe to use.

CBD is just a marketing scam

There will always be brands that take advantage of the latest craze and market their CBD products with CBD even though the CBD in them doesn’t do much. The health and wellness world is full of examples like that.

However, that just means you have to be extra careful in choosing your CBD products. Not all of them are made the same, and not all of them will provide you with the same effects. If you wish to see whether CBD will help your particular case, do your best to inform yourself about what to look for in a high-quality CBD product.

Benefits of CBD Oil

After everything is said and done, what benefits does CBD have, anyway? We already mentioned how most of its potential benefits have so far not been backed by science. Even so, people from all walks of life and with all sorts of medical conditions use CBD to improve their quality of life. Here are some of the possible advantages of using CBD oil:

Joint and Muscle health

62% of CBD users are taking cannabidiol to treat a medical condition, the most common of which is to maintain joint and muscle health.

Stress Management and Healthy Mood

Another reason people are taking CBD is because research suggests that it may support a healthy mood and stress resilience. Some even use it before taking part in socially challenging activities.

Other

Other possible health benefits of CBD include improved sexual health, heart health and immune function, as well as balancing inflammatory response, supporting brain health and maintaining cognitive health.

Is CBD right for you?

All of that being said, the question remains: are products containing CBD right for you?

Despite the current lack of scientific support, many chronic patients are already using CBD as a treatment option, either alongside their conventional therapy or by itself. Many are also using it to improve their general health, but in that case, it is more difficult to determine whether CBD is having any effect.

The truth is that everything we know about CBD oil so far is incredibly promising. We’ve likely only scratched the surface of what this substance has to offer, and we are eagerly anticipating more validated clinical evidence. Its mild adverse effects make it a relatively safe choice for most, and if your doctor or other medical professional feels that CBD could be a good choice for you, there’s no reason not to give it a go!
