Additionally, full-spectrum CBD is more likely to show enhanced results with higher dosages, whereas the effects of CBD isolates tend to plateau eventually. What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are natural compounds found in the resinous oils of most plants, and they play an important role in their survival. Recognized by the FDA as safe for human consumption, terpenes are also found in a variety of food and cosmetic products, because they are effective in regulating human health as well, due to their anti-inflammatory and stress relieving properties.

Cannabis is currently known as the most terpene-rich plant on earth. The highest concentrations are found in the female hemp flowers, although some of Cannabis’ most effective terpenes can also be found singularly in other plants you might be familiar with:

Myrcene
This is the most common terpene in Cannabis, but you’ll also find it in hops, eucalyptus, mango, bay leaves, and lemongrass. This terpene eases pain, inflammation, and helps your muscles relax.
Limonene
The second most common terpene in Cannabis, Limonene can also be found in citrus plants, so it’s not surprising that it aids the immune system, fights tumors and bacterial infections, and treats gastric issues.
Alpha-Pinene
This terpene is prevalent in Cannabis but can also be found in pine trees. It helps reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, and increase cognitive function.
Caryophyllene
This terpene is found in Cannabis, as well as black pepper and clove. It is antibacterial and antiseptic, and it helps ease inflammation, nerve pain, ulcers, and depression.
Linalool
The fifth most common terpene in Cannabis, Linalool is common in perfumes because of its pleasantly floral aroma. Also found in lavender, mint, and cinnamon, it has especially strong effects on the brain, helping with psychosis, stress relief, and a reduction in epileptic seizures.

 

Terpenes are responsible for the pungent smell associated with cannabis, and their aromatic secretions activate our olfactory system. Once activated, our olfactory system interacts with receptors in the limbic system of our brains, which is responsible for regulating the upper-level functions of our brain such as emotions, mood, stress regulation, muscle and joint function, and memory.
