It’s common knowledge that the human body develops a tolerance to marijuana—the more you use it, the more you need to get high. But when it comes to CBD, even though it is a compound of the cannabis plant, your body actually reacts to it in the opposite way, developing a reverse tolerance of sorts.
This is because CBD and THC don’t bind to the CB1 receptors in your brain in the same way. When THC binds to these receptors, they become desensitized, but with CBD, they do not.
However, like THC, CBD is lipophilic, meaning it dissolves in fats and compounds in your body over time. The compounded levels boost the health benefits. While some experience immediate effects after taking CBD, it can take up to four or six weeks for the CBD to build up and start working its magic. Many experts recommend treating CBD as an everyday supplement precisely for this reason. Whether you’re taking it for anxiety, sleep, inflammation, or pain, CBD works best when taken regularly.
CBD also works best when it’s full-spectrum, which means it contains trace amounts of other cannabis compounds, including THC (less than .3%, by law). Research suggests multiple compounds from the cannabis plant heighten its health benefits, which is what we call the “entourage effect.” In addition, a lower dose of full-spectrum CBD is as or more effective than higher doses of isolate, which may help prevent possible drug interactions. Full-spectrum CBD is also less processed, which means more of the plant’s natural chemical properties remain intact.
